Technically they are the same. An autograph is referred to as a signature held in high regard by the recipient of the signature. Such as from an Author or Actor.

An autograph is a person's OWN signature that you possess. So it usually equates to someone signing something...with a signature, that has no real business value except in the fact that they are "famous" ... or infamous. A signature belongs to official documents and business transactions and "signifys" the representation of THAT persons intent.
It's their name in handwriting...you got my signature on THAT. *wink*

They both refer to the same thing; the manner in which you sign your name on a piece of paper. The difference is this. An autograph has a status, which a signature does not. Autographs are usually given by famous people to their adoring fans.
You and I unfortunately do not belong in the same group. The only exciting thing that we will be asked to do is to put our `signature' on income tax returns, life insurance policies, cheque leaves and what have you.

autograph = auto + graph which means anything marked by self. Signature is a telltale mark, usually a name that is legally valid.

so every signature is an autograph but not all autographs are signatures
