Chikungunya, the viral disease caused by the mosquito Aedes Aegypti, has been affecting people throughout the country and has proved to be life-threatening.

Currently, over 9.7 lakh suspected cases have been reported from 121 districts in seven States like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Kerala.

More often than not the disease cannot be diagnosed. The only way to detect it is through blood tests. While recovery is an expected outcome, the symptoms can be felt from one day to over a year.

Some of the symptoms are high fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomitting, joint pain and rashes. The infected person needs to be isolated from mosquitoes so that the disease does not get transmitted to other people.

Curing the disease has been quite challenging for the medical fraternity. In fact, according to the Andhra Pradesh government (Minister for Health and Finance Mr. K. Rosaiah), there is no prescribed cure for chikungaya. However, Homeopathy can cure its many symptoms without having any side- effect. Some Homeopathic drugs that can be of help to cure the symptoms of this viral disease are Eupatorium Perfoliatum, Gelsemium and Belladonna.

Eupatorium Perfoliatum is given to a patient with high fever and pain in the bones. A patient suffers from shivering chills followed by muscular pain, violent headaches, dizziness and faintness. At such a time, Gelsemium would be helpful to relieve symptoms.

Belladona is another homeopathic medicine that is helpful. It should be taken in the initial stages of fever when the patient is going through a high feverish state. At such time, the patient experiences high fever with icy cold feet.

All these medicines are available to cure the patient but the best measure to deal with this epidemic is prevention. The chikungunya virus vaccine is known to prevent the disease but is no longer being produced and has very limited availability. Therefore, self-help prevention tips need to be practised. Some of them are as follows:.

Avoiding mosquito bites while traveling to areas where this disease is known to occur by wearing long- sleeved shirts and long pants, Eliminating mosquito- breeding sites and maintaining cleanliness.
