What does strep throat look like in the back of the throat in the very early stages?

Question

I was exposed to a toddler over the weekend that had it and he was running a low grade fever the first 12 hours I had him. But my daughter and my son was around him to. Are we more likely to get it or would it be his parents or could we all come down with it or does it pick the one with the lowest immune system. My throat is a little red looking like as if I was just getting a sore throat. Could that be a early sign.

Additional Details

We know for sure the toddler had it because his dad took him to the doctor Saturday morning. I should say I had him from this Sunday night till last night.

hard to distinguish strep in the beginning it has symptoms of any other illness good sign of getting sick is fatigue soreness all over including throat. You can all get sick just depends on hand washing and close contact with the child. Load every one up on vitamin c and zinc and try not to share food and beverages mostly clean and disinfect to keep from spreading germs if someone does get sick

Very bright red and swollen... almost impossible to swallow without pain. May have ear ache associated with early stages.

I'm not sure. I had strep throat a few months ago.. It was hard to see myself but the biggest symptom was:

It hurt a lot to swallow- so have him drink or eat something and if it hurts then he has strep throat. Mine even hurt when I breathed/ swallowed air. I could not eat until I got antibiotic.

Wait a few days and ask if it hurts for your child to swallow or if they have a sore throat- then take them to the doctors.

It's actually hard to diagnose strep throat based on how your throat looks, but the typical "strepy" throat is red, and has white exudate (gunk) on the back of the throat or on the tonsils. More importantly, do you have 1) sore throat, 2) fever, 3) swollen glands in the front of your neck and 4) lack of a cough? Three or four of the above means you should visit your doctor for a strep test.

How do you know he had strep as opposed to a plain old sore throat?? If it is strep he needs to be on antibiotics and FINISH THEM; as this can lead to life threatening illnesses.

If you did not kiss him or drink or eat after him there is no particular reason any of you should become ill...that is why you wash your hands...

Well, I think you should emphasize more on the treatment part than the observation part. Leave the diagnosis for the Doctors. Just take precautions.

A good way to tell is to have someone smell your breat. Streptococcus has a distinct smell. Also, don't just take antibiotics cause you think you have it, make sure you go to the doctor to have it tested.
