What is lacking in our present education system and how can we make sustainable changes to correct it?

A good education system is fundamental to a nation that wants to be economically and otherwise independent. In my view, India still has a long way to go to reach this goal.

As a student, I’ve seen many improvements in our school curriculum.Through the years, I have seen the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) try to provide "balanced textbooks" and helpful supplementary texts. Yet problems like emphasis on memorizing certain paragraphs from books and evaluation on the basis of "bookish knowledge" still persist.

These dilemmas need to be amended with the help of educators, parents, and teachers. What can be done to alleviate the crisis?

Very Good Question. The issue is not only about doing away with evaluation on the basis of bookish knowledge and memory but what to do in its place? To my mind, the word "bookish" actually implies impractial and therefore we should cover all aspects(big picture) of what maybe deemed practical education instead of just discussing the curriculum.

Even mystics like Osho and Krishnamurthy have said that through Education alone, social transformation is possible and both also stressed the need for education to fulfill its real purpose- help the child find his vocation in life. I could not trace the link of the origninal article "As a Parent" by Wipro Chairman Azim Premji but his words are worth repeating :-

"The primary purpose of a school is to guide the child’s discovery of herself and her world and to identify and mature the child’s talents. Just as each seed contains the future tree, each child is born with infinite potential. In the article he suggests that many teachers and parents try to be potters instead of Gardners in moulding their children’s future.” Imagine a school in which sees children as seeds to be nurtured-here the teacher is a gardner who tries to bring out the potential already present in the child. This is very different from the current view which sees the child as clay to be moulded where the teachers and parents are potters deciding what shape the clay should take. There is an old Chinese saying ,” Give a seed to a potter and you shall have a bonsai." In a nutshell, as a teacher and parent, be a gardner, not a potter..

The great Phislosopher Socrrates had said "Education is not the filling of a vessel but the kindling of a flame". The word Education itself comes from the word "Educere" which means to bring out what is already in and not blindly stuff in. The purpose of Education is to detect talent proactively. For this, it is essential that education has to be based on application and intelligence( with open book exams wherever necessary) instead of trying to test memory of knowledge. This is especially so in the era of internet where everybody can have the knowledge but it is only one's intelligence with which one can distinguish or differentiate oneself. Memory does not have that much significance since everything is there on the net- its application that should matter and be tested. Since people tend to remember more of what they happen to be interested in, memory can be a tool to know vocation instead of an end in iteself. Children can be made aware of main memory techniques.

Einstein had said that Imagaination is more important than knowledge. Each person's imagaination is diffferent and therefore he has to be guided correctly to chose his occupation in life where he is going to spend a majority of waking hours. Not doing so would be disastrous as pointed out by so many of our spiritual stalwarts on this blog- http://mypyp.wordpress.com/2005/10/10/qu… Swami Vivekanand said "Education is the manifestation of perfection already present in man"- Unless there is perfection in education, that perfection cannot be drawn out.Real education should enable you to find out what is uniquely you. That is what matters in practical life, not bookish knowledge.

Natural talent often manifests well without any formal coaching. I played lawn Tennis for several years but was not satisfied with the backhand(bane of many racquet games). My younger brother got it right in the first week itself without any coaching in such a brilliant manner that many players complimented him. My wife is qualified in English hons but it is me, an MBA who has written articles and poems for magazines and newspapers. Similarly, she does certain business work much better than I do. My father does much better trading in shares than me despite not having any formal training in Technical analysis(graphs) which I have. I once worked in a company where the rise of one person was much faster than four others though all of them were from the same batch from the same institute. Talent is more important than the tool(knowledge).

There was an article recently that corporate india was willing to take only 20% of the total pool because people coming out of institutes were not practically talented. This is because functional, operative, practical talent in the corporate world is different from analysis taught in MBA schools. Also, MBA is about analysis but real life is about synthesis which is completely different. Even in the engineering context, John Adair, in his book, effective innovation while giving the example of a trained artist who excelled as an inventor concluded that “Engineering is just a state of mind. You do not need a vaste amount of knowledge” All this clearly shows that process(imagination & thinking) is more important than input(knowledge) especially memorized bookish knowledge. We should give equal if not more importance to humotech in addition to looking for biotech and infotech.

Since not too much knowlege is required for talented people, short term courses should be availalable for those who may have made a wrong choice of occupation.

Even in our Shastras it is given that the Sukshma(subjective-person) is more important than the sthula(objective-knowledge ). What a person does with a particular knowledge is more important than knolwedge per se and to detect that, personal attention has to be given- the kind of personal attention that is given by a Tennis coach when he feeds 60 balls to his pupil one after another and monitors close progress. Then it is possible to discvoer that person's Svadharma(purpose in life according to Shastras). Each of the Pandavas being unique in their own way, one of the teachings of the Mahabharat is to develop your unique quality. Even generally "Teaching the student teaches the teacher"- more so if the teacher tries to study the student.

It would not be out of place to mention here that the initiator of Lateral thinking, Edward de Bono had stated that thinking should be taught in schools because many intellectuals/knowledgeble people were poor thinkers. Thinking also helps in detecting potential. In India's context, not making lateral thinking a part of formal education is absurd because the greatest post independent rags to riches story ( Dhirubhai Ambani) was because of lateral thinking:-
http://www.lifepositive.com/Mind/persona…
Other kinds of thinking can also be taught.

It should be mentioned here that countries like Russia have made chess compulsory to force students to think logically. Sites like braingle.com insist that mind games also form a part of conginitive reserve and should be a part of formal education. This is in the context of Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Concentration is the secret of success in politics, in war - in all management of human affairs". Concentration can be because of interest or one could say mental strength -both should be monitored.

Education must also impart good vocational and physical training and inculcate values to respect all vocations/professions- that is something we have to learn from the United States where a janitor can talk to a professor on one to one basis on the same table as an equal. The caste system which determines occupations by birth is fundamentally incorrect. All that also causes inter-personal problems in practical management.

In books like "Karma, Destiny and Career", it is given what can happen if you try to pursue an exalted occupation(lawyer, doctor) when in reality your real vocation maybe relatively humble(carpenter, plumber). In New york, a child psychologist became a taxi driver because driving was his passion.(This may seem absurd but normally people seeking artistic satisfaction have such problems) Therefore, formal education should give equal respect to all occupations and people should be respected for what they are instead of snobishness of degrees and qualifications associated with certain exalted professions.

It would not be out of place to mention here that some people who have won nobel prixes(DNA, Microchip) have admitted that not being too formally qualified was an advantage because they could get creative ideas. This is in the context of "Knowledge is food for the ego". If you feel you already know too much, you can't get creative ideas. Students should be aware of all this.(does not imply that one should not be well qualified)

In the Unnited States, one of the ways of dealing with work-misfits is to ask them "What interest did you have as a child?"Why not nip the problem in the bud- when the person is a child? I have come across around 30 Americans who have written books on this subject. This American site summarises best what the education system should be doing:-

http://www.careerspice.com/employee_sear…

J.krishnamurthy has even advocated small schools for the purpose of detecting the child's potential . It is very important that each teacher should also be trained as a vocational psychologist and talent scout so that the student does not choose the wrong profession and suffer for life- "The person who has found his vocation is life is a blessed human being. Let him ask for no other blessedness"- Thomas Carlyle.

All this covers management of self(knowing oneself). Children should also be taught practical management of money(people suffer because of lack of accounting knowledge) and practical psychology( management of people). Nobody in practical life can escape management of money and people.

There still seems to be some hesitation on teachers part where computers are concerned- computers have made possible what Shri Aurobindo said "The teacher should be a guide(not a sage on stage but a guide on the side) and not an instructor and encourage the student to discover the answer for himself". Children should know all main microsoft products thoroughlly word, excel, power point , access(programming insught).. Online education maybe convenient but some personal attention from teacher is a must.

Another good thing krishnamurthy suggested was that children must be taught to appreciate nature as a part of formal education from early childhood so that when they grow up, they have some reservations in detroying mother earth if they happen to be in conflict.

In India, empahsis should also be given to team work and group dyanmics because Indians have a poor reputation of working in teams. India has a competitive advantage vis-a-vis China (English has been made compulsory there)currently but many Indians cannot speak and write English fluently despite studying in English medium schools. Efforts should be made to ensure that Indians know colloquial English since India cannot afford to lose that advantage.

There is a difference between being wise, being knowledgeable, being well informed and being intelligent- such disctinction should be clearly made to the students so that some of their false and baseless fears subside and there is a reduction in the number of board exam suicides which have gone up considerably in the past five years. Students should also be trained to be wary of "Information pollution" since they confuse being knowledgeable with intelligence which is why this is such a relevant question.

Last but not the least, people keep talking of instilling "values". Citing real life examples, it should be explained that everything that is good(Actor Naseerudin Shah) is not commercially successful(Actor Govinda) and vice-versa. There are other examples of the goddess of wealth(laxmi) and the goddess of knowledge(Saraswati) not being directly proportional.(Jab Taqdeer maherbaan, tab gadha pahelwaan) So judging success by money alone and blindly pursuing can be silly and counterproductive at times-better to teach that through practical examples rather than give theoretical lecture on "values"

Practical knowledge is best-Osho specified that there is a difference between knowledge(Bookish) and knowing(expereience). With role plays and group dynamics, the latter can be imparted in some disciplines and not lleft to the vagaries of practical experience.

The twenty first century is expected to be stressful and therefore yoga and meditation should also be taught properly in schools. Physical fitness was stressed by Swami Vivekanand and we have a lot to learn from the western world just the way they learn yoga from us.

Unfourtnately, Education has become a business and nobody is bothered about the real purpose of education and one ends up paying more in donation and not getting any real education. Its a loss both ways like "Heads I win, Tails you lose". Whether it is education or anything else, unless there is a continous and consistent monitering mechanism, nobody shall be accountable and nothing shall have lasting success.

This may seem an exaggerated answer but I am trying to answer the word "bookish" and trying to give a practical alternative in totality both from readings and practical experience(without that one cannot relate with what one reads) from diverse perspectives. Many examples(my own family disbelived without them) are given to substantiate views with conviction since I am not an expert on education.

Thanks to all those who participated. There were some really terrific answers. Congratulations, Hiren for a thorough and informative answer. I liked the "not a sage on stage but a guide on the side" line. You emphasized practicality and nature and made some good points quoting great minds.

Enjoy!
Impressive. I encourage people to read through this. This is such an excellent answer, and I applaud the writer for his thoughtfulness and thoroughness.

The answer is long, but very, very good. There's lots of reason to hope that India is the star of the future, given this sort of thoughtful work on the part of people of influence. Batman, this was a beautiful question!

It is a good reading, but it requires a good editing too. The points are not brought to focus. They are happily blurred. It is good blog rather than best answer for this forum.Batman threw a question that asked for some tangible solution, not a philosophical answer.

This man doesn't claim to be an expert on education. Given that, I see a lot of insight in comments like: "Real education should enable you to find out what is uniquely you. That is what matters in practical life, not bookish knowledge."

and "Children should also be taught practical management of money and practical psychology. Nobody in practical life can escape management of money and people." And I like the gardener analogy.

Compliments to the asker for phrasing the question very well and yahoo for providing a splendid platform since TV talk shows have limitations of discussing certain exhaustive issues. Further "walk the talk" should be followed or all this has no real meaning.

Thank you, Batman, for a clear and provocatived question. I have not had time to read all the responses, but some of them are quite impressive. As a former dean of a college of education, I can tell you this kind of thinking needs to be more widespread!

With the use of the Internet, problem like this should be less and less in turn of time. The concept of sharing knowledge and digital-divide issue will be forwarded rather than the issue of education system itself. Introduction of the use of media technologies to schools, especially elementary is becoming the issue of how the government want to involve in educating the whole countries.

what they should do is try to change the examination pattern. And also parents should not force the child against his wise for perticular subjects without fully convinsing him . The other way is remove the distracting elements from the society so that he can fully cocentrate on his studies. Present education system has no fault, the student is not mature enough to understand how the education will benefit him, reduce the syllabus of classes below 8th and give them more time to understand the real world.
And best way to use psychology to make there mind more clear about the education system and the future perspective of it..

Education has not been made compulsory. This should be done. Political influence should be totally removed. This will end the lowering of educational value by declaring that making subjects optional, attending higher education without passing the lower standards, etc .Education should be handed over to a group of scholars having no political link. subjects dealing with Past history should be replaced by subjects in new inventions. There is no need for a by-hearting tables when calculator is available. Only what should be done like whether to add or subract or multiply or divide, etc. Relaxing the passing marks for certain groups should be avoided. Provision should be made for extra coaching without any additional fee in the school. Hon. Dr degree etc given without qualifying in anything for politician, etc should be done away with. Secondary education above 8th standard should have a syllabus having technical subject which will help in earning while studying should be introduced.

The most vital step would be to depoliticise the education system of India. As regards the main question, nothing is lacking in our present education system. It is the most comprehensive system of knowledge in the world. Just remove the excessive elements such as politicians, reservations, quotas, extortative fees, ragging etc and we would have already made the sustainable changes to correct it.
Just as a trained sculptor would only remove the unwanted portions of a rock to present his creation of a fine art in the form of a beautiful statue, so also the educators and parents of India must carve out a good education system from the already existing fund of knowledge.

Our Present education system is bogged down because of several reasons

I as a student would like to enumerate some of these

    One
There is the rote learning system that we have been encouraging for centuries
Original and innovative thinking is not encouraged and so talent rots while memory triumphs

    Two
The teachers today in most institutions lack the interest with which teachers taught in the 80s and 90s
This creates a lack of interest among students as well who do not participate in class activities as much as they should

    Three
The syllabi for most boards in India are incomplete and do not carry a clear cut explanation of concepts
This makes it difficult for the learner to grasp the meaning of the text and apply it

    Four
Our System is academically biased and does not pay much attention to the other activities that are essential for over-all development of an individual....which creates an under-confident
    personality

All these factors come together to make the Indian Education system suffer and the Indian student face creative restriction

I am very happy to answer this question and i use to think a lot about the flaw in our education system not only as a student but also when i started my career as a lecturer-ECE, working for 5 years in late 80s.

    1. Rote memory based learning is emphasised from KG level. Analytical and reasoning skills are discouraged and crushed at the elementary level itself.

    2. School curriculum is treated like a religion and in my own experience, the first assault on my reasoning was to memorise and vomit "Jana gana mana..." -

    3. This blind education continues for 12 years and by this time the young brain is completely brain washed and starts believing that everything written in a book is ultimate and already everything has been invented by a white man.

    4. University education - There is no relationship between the Industry and the institution. I know professors teaching electrical engineering for ages but have not visited a power station in their life.

The reason for our sucess in IT field is because of the easy access to PC. Our education is not skill based and outdated. If you visit any engineering college, you will be surprised to find that most of the final year B.E students have nothing much to do and will be going around for project work. You spend 4 or 6 years studying computer science and the moment you come out, the entire market has changed and expecting different skills.

A HR director of a US company once told me, " I get the best and the worst candidates from India. My biggest dilemma is when i ask them about a specific job skill and experience which is not required for that position, they always say "YES".

The method of teaching should be changed.
We speak our mother tongue when we are child but we never go for the grammer of it.I mean our mother teaches us simple words and not the grammer but when i was in school before making us speak English our class teacher used to teach us the grammer.
We are learning each and every subject even if we are interested or not.Actually we should opt for the subject which we like and not for the one which we should go for.The envirnoment in which we are brought up,The way we are taught in schools and colleges are not the right ways.We are given only theoritical knowledge of subject but i think along with it we must be given practical knowledge. There must be grade system and not percentage one.
A group of experts must work and try to find out a better education system.

First of all, neither the parent, nor the teacher knows what actually the student would like to learn, what are the hidden abilities and ideas of the pupil. The system in no way enhance the brain power of the student, but only enhance the storage space of the brain. All good and rubbish, wanted and unwanted are stored there, just for the sake of passing and scoring the exam.
I know a B.Sc (Chemistry) graduate, passed with distinction working as 'bus conductor' in state transport service. What his qualification has to do with his profession. Nothing. Its a utter waste of money, time and energy of somany people.
I think for the first few years in school, a team of experts, need to examine from a distance, what actually the child wish for, what are his talents to me moulded etc., Once concluded, the child needs to be trained accordingly. The present system of cocktale curriculum will only confuse and misguide the student.

    Hi Batman,

This is Jollydeep. My Answer to your Question.

Well, If you look at a global situation today, you find that Indians are doing very well in every field and possess much superior knowledge which is not only technical specific but also hold good hand over general knowledge sphere. We have always outdone our counterparts from other countries. But if we look at the developed countries and understand why in spite of so much talent we are lacking in terms of progress, I can see just one slack "DISCIPLINE". We are not disciplined and organised in our way of work.

What we need to introduce in our teaching system is discipline. It is the competitiveness in our system which makes us thrivers and survivors to reach the top. But we surely need to create better learning environment, much better practical learning which will enhance our thinking and learning skills.

The competition should remain, only thing we need to do away with is the paid seats system. Let there be tough competition in getting the seats, but not a money based affair. We can have tax contribution to education. This will ease the burden on many people and many fair share of education can be given.

The education should be a privilege for all and not the privileged.

Swami Vivekananda said, " Education is the manifestation of perfection already within a man." There is a lot of theory in our present education system. There should be a lot of practical experience in the field.
If you show child actual horse, you need not to describe a horse again. Quality teachers shoud be appointed & should be given very much respect by the society & they should be paid high salaries.

what we can do is change our ways of setting up a question paper. a question paper is the most important part in education as it determins your level in the class and tests you on what you have learned in the class. examiners can ask questions which are base on the applications of the theory that we learn and that will be most useful in improving our dear education system that all of us, CBSE students hate. thank you

The Education System in India must incorporate the following.

1.English should be the medium of education from Class 1.
It is because of English that most of the IT industry is flourishing.
India has so many languages, if there was no English how could we communicate with each other? We are getting BPO business from abroad because we speak good English.

2.Teachers should be paid well. The profession of Teaching should be respected and the salary should be at par with other good jobs.
If this does not happen, then we will not get good teachers, only those who cannot get a job elsewhere will apply for the job of teaching.

3.Educate the GIRL CHILD If a girl child is educated then she will educate her family and know the value of education. The whole family gets educated.

4.If the teachers are good then the method of teaching will automatically improve.

    Thanks.

Education in INDIA has various good features and few bad features . coming to the bad features first there is a whole lot of difference between student studying from Delhi public school and a student studying from government school although in both of them teaching pattern ( syllabus) is the same . Take collages SRI RAM COLLAGE OF COMMERCE COLLAGE graduate has more market value than MOTI LAL NEHRU COLLAGE GRADUATE. the standard of teaching is different in the capital forget about villages & towns .Here lies the biggest flaws in our educational syatem and i guarantee you that if this flaw is removed our educational syastem will be the best educational system in the whole world

As a mother of two , now 25 & 21 I have come to realize that its important to attain grades, but this is by no means a yard stick for intelligence nor adult success. Both our schools & collages do not have the faculty to understand the mental, emmotional, social behaviour of a growing adolecent , young adult mind.Hence, we find children at these stages either misunderstood or frusterated. The same child put into a more acceptable ,understanding and pleaseing atmosphere blooms and grows instantly.I speak from India, where basic education is a luxary, yet have produced many of the worlds most renound.

First of all the education system should be developed. Now also, in the 21st century also there are many schools in which computer facilities are not there. It should be done. Marking system should be made a bit easy by which students don't be depressed and seeing their results do suicide or have poison. This may help students in studying easily and there will be less competition.

The present education system of India is the result of years of intellectual effort in the right direction. The system can only be as good as its operators. To change the education system of India we would first have to change its politicians. The people that rule the system must change for the better of the Nation.
In the field of education it is important that only qualified and sensible Indian citizens be allowed to govern the system and its students.
Once the government and all its ministers work with their hearts and mind in the best interests of the progress of this great country, the education system would start improving. The reservations and quotas must vanish from everyone's sight if India desires to have a bright future. The quality of Institutes is as important as the quantity of colleges that are growing in the country. The government should ensure that quality is not compromised in its pursuit of quantity.
More money and energy has to be supplied to the education system and its budget. The fees charged by colleges must be reduced to a reasonable amount. Education and its importance should penetrate the villages of India. The rural folk must be made aware of the benefits of education.
The success of the Nation depends on the future of its youth. The young men and women graduating from reputed colleges only must take the responsibility of guiding India to total development in the field of Education.
Knowledge, Wisdom and Common sense must prevail for the general progress of India

According to me our education system lacks in immediate upgradation of the syllabus. We need to learn things that are new and interesting and not obsolete ones. With new knowledge we can be more competitive in the days to come. Most of the time we learn the things that were taught to our elder brothers and sisters. What needs to be improved is the system of adapting the new concepts as soon as they are developed. If one wants to change the syllabus and adapt the new concepts it takes a long time to put in front of the board and get the approval to include those concepts in the syllabus.

As far as 10..in 10+2+3...there aren't many mistakes
Although I see a new trend where people are admitting their students to schools with IB and Cambridge board just b'coz they offer international curriculum...but let me tell u that i have a friend who lives in the US,educated in India, and he said that the syllabus is so low, that a 5th standard student can write their 7th grade math paper...so I have realised that by going to schools with IB Cambridge does not increase our standard to international level, but DECREASES and hinders our intellectual capacity.

in the 2+3 format,it is nothing but the situation of everyone wanting the pie of the same pie...and at this rate I don't think there will b enough pie left for open category

so in conclusion there is nothing wrong with our curriculum but its our thought that is hindering our progress...this is only my view point of the topic..yours may b different

I'm a mechanical graduate and this is what i think

All our teachers try to give knowledge from exam point of view!
They just prepare us for exams.

All i had learnt in college wont get used in practical life. Practical life is totally different.

We should get some good knowledge and should stop mugging up syllabus just to pass

    hello.
in our system of to day as we are going towards to good development, i think we are lacking good guidance, which is lacking in our educational system. so it is our duty mostly the head of education, and the duty of parents to keep the eye on their children's.

    thanks

Pay package of the teachers should be improved. Teachers are the ones who will build our nation's next generation. All smart and intelligent people aim to become doctors, engineers, business persons - anything...but not teachers. This is only because they are not payed well in our country. They should be payed heavily and the selection criteria should also be tough and logical. There should be special schools which should be training the teachers. Only then we can have good teachers all over the country schools and colleges. This will automatically improve the whole education system.

Hi, I have a opinion that we should look at changing the current educational system which is more driven towards the text books and non practical use. Most of us have individual skills which can be naturally horned-up or spiced up in the lower root of the education system(s).

But our higher level of education is more driven towards getting a job and often lacks materials or innertia for our lateral movement in the society. Education insitution(s) should realise this fact and need to make the course materials and the curriculam more towards the practical use which would throw more light on the practical problem(s) one might face in his/her career/life/business. The American / British education system are defenitely not on the Bookish system rather on the practical use of the Bookish knowledge one might possess.

My answer presumably touches the core. I know there is NCERT; balanced textbooks; supplementary texts. But this is just not the issue.
Being SECULAR is the issue. We call our nation secular; our school system secular. This is the issue.
The founding teaching of morality lies in our scriptures - whichever religion you turn to. Cut our scriptures out of the class room and you have made NCERT our guiding angel.
I just cannot learn morality through NCERT who I have no passion for.
This passion - compelling emotion - I can attain only through the teachings of the Scriptures - name which religion, which scriptures - I am willing to read and learn. I can learn morality only through the parables of Christ or writings of other saints or through the scriptures of other religions, but only marginally through an NCERT write up about Mahatma Gandhi (no doubt I have great admiration) but the passion is missed. This I can get only through the scriptures.
Let the NCERT introduce God into the classroom and morality and ethics will return fully to India. The classroom will resonate once again with a sweet heavenly rhythmic education.
Be sure I am sure we are not talking of Maths, Physics or Science in this question. The teaching methods in these subjects whether wavering a little this side or that still goal onto the same answer. The question that is attacking our teaching system today is of morals and ethics which I have explained. Bring back God into the classroom. Not only one God, but a God from every religion, through all the scriptures available - and let NCERT be the one to open out the Holy Books. The ethos of our country India will change a millionfold.

first of all fundamental of education is good & also improve the knowledge of good student though the problem arise among teachers, student & parents. for that my opinion is that we have arrange parents meeting for problems arise from his/her child among all diff. what is major or common problale we have to observe.according to me in india the syllabus is too lenghty for the student so it should make easy from the the pont of view all student because all student are not clever or brilliant.and also make syllababus like foreign styla thats why no more student go outside for study.
