Try using Tuff stuff upholstery cleaner this you can buy at a auto parts storre. Remember always test in an inconspicuous corner of the sofa first before proceeding, I have used this on my couch before and it never damaged the fabric. But if you are too concerned then I would suggest using a professional cleaner for this purpose. Fabric cleaning

Many furniture fabrics now carry the furniture industry's cleanability code adopted in 1969. It gives the consumer information about the proper furniture cleaning methods for specific fabrics. There are four letters in the code, immediately followed by furniture cleaning instructions. The code letters are W, S, W-S, and X.

Permanent furniture cleaning labels will normally be found under the seat cushion. When spot cleaning furniture, it is always a good idea for consumers to first pretest the fabric for discoloration and shrinkage on an inconspicuous part of the furniture. When overall furniture cleaning is required, professional furniture cleaning will often achieve the most satisfactory results. Never remove cushion covers or arm caps for separate furniture cleaning. This may destroy the backing, cause shrinking and create color changes.

    Code "W"

To prevent overall soil, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is a recommended step in furniture cleaning. Spot clean, using the foam only from a water-based cleaning agent such as a mild detergent or non-solvent upholstery shampoo product. Apply foam with a soft brush in a circular motion. Vacuum when dry. Pretest a small area before proceeding. Use a professional furniture cleaning service when an overall soiled condition has been reached.

    Code "S"

To prevent overall soil, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is recommended. Spot clean using a mild water-free solvent or dry cleaning product containing carbon tetrachloride which is highly toxic. Pretest a small area before proceeding. Furniture cleaning by a professional cleaning service only is recommended.

    Code "W-S"

To prevent overall soil, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is recommended. Spot clean, with a mild solvent, an upholstery shampoo, or the foam from a mild detergent. When using a solvent or dry cleaning product, follow instructions carefully and clean only in a well ventilated room. Avoid any product which contains carbon tetrachloride which is highly toxic. With either method, pretest a small area before proceeding. Use a professional furniture cleaning service when an overall soiled condition has been reached.

    Code "X"

Clean this fabric only by vacuuming or light brushing to prevent accumulation of dust or grime. Water-based foam furniture cleaners or solvent based furniture cleaning agents of any kind may cause excessive shrinking, staining or distortion of the surface pile and, therefore, should not be used.

    Good Luck !

Velvet is not a fabric, but a weave. Since velvet may be composed of many different fibers, it is essential that the fabric be tested prior to cleaning. The crushed effect in crushed velvet is set with heat and water, and is usually removed by wet cleaning.Tufted velvet has a latex backing, which may be softened when using solvents and dry cleaning methods.Velvet usually responds well to wet cleaning or combined wet and dry cleaning techniques, depending on the results of your tests. Leave plenty of time for cleaning this type of fabric, since you will have to use special finishing techniques to return the fabric to its original appearance.

The most effective and safest way to clean velvet is to have it professionally cleaned. However, if you do want to try it yourself, you can try mixing 1/2 teaspoon of dishwashing detergent with water, shake it up well, and apply the suds only. Apply only a small amount, and blot between applications. Be careful not to get the fabric very wet. If this is not effectively removing the stains, try using dry cleaning solvent. Dont disturb for at least 24 hours after cleaning.

Always do a cleaning test in an inconspicuous area to determine the suitability of your procedures and your cleaner.

    SPECIAL VELVET PROCEDURES

Always work the velvet in the direction of the nap rather than against it. This includes vacuuming, brush agitation and extraction.

Initial Grooming – Immediately after cleaning each section, you should groom the velvet in the direction of the nap. In other words, brush it down. Do not try to brush against the nap while it is wet.

    Dry the fabric completely.

Final Grooming – Once the fabric is dry, groom the pile against the nap using a Brass Velvet Brush. This will lift and separate the fibers and bring back the soft feel of the velvet.

If you are in USA, go to a hardware store and talk to the people out there they will show you few products.

Read the instructions on the product before purchasing it.

    Buy it and use it.

You will find similar store and or product elsewhere also.

If you can. Test the product on same material or on back corner of a pillow....

If you are trying to clean a spill it would help if you can tell what is it that needs lifting out.
