Are chains better than studded tires?

I'll be moving to a snowy area next fall.

Are chains better than studded tires?

My car, a pontiac vibe, is a total lightweight and terrible in the snow.

What can I do to make it so I'll be able to drive around in snowy, icy conditions?

Studded tires are the best, but when the road is clear, you can't quickly take them off. The only time you really need studded tires is if you're in the boondocks and your roads don't get plowed.

I would say that studded tires are better because many police departments are getting rid of the chains.

tire chains are not for everyday use, only emergencies. it is good to carry a set if you are truely in a snow belt. depending on the stte, studs may be illegal. they actually decrease your traction dry roads.

try upgrading to snow tires, go for a good brand and not price. you can remount your regular tires in the spring.

In 42 years of driving in winter country, I have never used chains. Thay are only for temporary use, and are usually mandated for mountain passes at certain times, not for everyday driving. Studs are illegal after a certain date each year because of road wear, and can only be put in brand new winter tires that have the spots for them. The are great on ice, but do nothing in snow. The newest generation of winter tires is great in snow and ice without studs. At the very least, you should have good all-season tires with the M&s designation. I bet you have summer touring tires on your car, and the Vibe has a fairly wide tire for the size of the car, making touring tires dangerous in winter conditions. See a reputable tire dealer about good winter tires for all 4 wheels, or at least an upgrade to good all-seasons.
