I do Ashtakshara Mantra Japa (108 times, morning) and Gayatri Devi Mantra Japa (108 X 3 times) during Sanyavandana Pooja daily. Mantra is effective when it is received from Guru (Teacher) only.

List of mantras given below is inclusive not exclusive.

Mantra:
The root 'Man' in the word Mantra comes from the first syllable of that word, meaning 'to think', and 'Tra' from 'Trai' meaning 'to protect' or 'free' from the bondage of Samsara or the phenomenal world. By the combination of 'Man' and 'Tra' comes Mantra.

A) Hinduism:

There are Mantras for each deity as Moola Mantra, Gayatri Mantra, Maha Mantra, Bija Mantra, etc.

Whatever works for you. It should be goal oriented, even if that goal is just to calm the mind. I use a common one, "Hamsa" which means "I am That.." We are without a soul, we are One with the Universal Self, intended to awaken me from my slumber and dream fed by my sense organs that I am a separate entity from the rest of the world.

"Om", "Hu", "Hamsa", and "Om Mani Padme Hum" are among ones I've used. I also use the Hail Mary prayer and the "Our Father" as mantras, as well as several other phrases that were taught to me by various spiritual teachers.

Hi Anil, I just wanted to address the Above saying the Rosary!
The Rosary is not a Manta.
The Rosary consists of One our Father Glory be and Ten Hail Mary's
This is repeated 5 times as a Decade, There are four decades!
A mantra is an unbroken prayer where this as you see is not.
Besides this I know of none sorry.

I see almost all of them missed the point. Mantra comes from the sanskrit root - mananAt trAyate iti mantraha. So its not for recitation verbally. Manan means engaging the mind. And certainly the Vedas did not intend to make you believe that you are god or something through mantra. You will not become god by chanting soham or hamsa. Even monists who claim soul is god profess that one has to move to ajapa japa [meditation without mantra] to come closer to samadhi.

Also, it is clearly mentioned that public discussion of the mantra you practice is not allowed. This is why you are required to receive it from a bonafide Guru. Exception is mantras for general good can be freely recited - this means mantras that seek to bring well being and goodness of all living beings. Also, mantras cannot be in other languages just because no other language has vibratory congruence with the cosmos other than those in sanskrit, for the simple fact that when other languages originated they had no clue about the science behind it.

Mantras help you cleanse your chakras, and synchronize your energies with the cosmos. To this effect, every individual has a frequency of vibration, a mantra that matches his latent energy form [the soul], [sometimes] instantly catapults the practitioner to higher levels of consciousness. The science is that when your mind dwells in the lower energies [not in the self], its vibrations are gross. Once you establish in your Self, you instantly experience Sat-Chit-Ananda raising your conscious level.

Any lesser purpose in the use of mantras obviously undermines its potency. Such unregulated and misdirected practice at best has no effect and at worst leads to confused state of being. If you chant potent mantras without knowing its rishi, chhandas, devta, anga nyasas, and kara nyasas, delusion of the self is imminent. Gayatri cannot be practiced by all. Gayatri being a Vedic mantra it is required you know the guiding meters [chhandas] which guides you with the pronunciation, accent and rhythm. You might have observed Rg Veda foreg is sung in a particular way. Gayatri is from Rg Veda and follows the same rules.
Mantras like Hare Krishna Maha Mantra can be practiced by all.

AAAaaaUUUuuummmMMM.Silently, closing eyes, experiencing the inner vibration during, without interfering, allowing the mantra to take its own course-elongation, shortening, going to its subtler or cruder forms, modifications- just allow it to be. Alphaskorpio has given a good overview.

What it implies is the value of a spiritual Teacher.

    Two examples, accessible via books:

"I am a being of violet fire, I am the purity God desires," Mark Prophet, "The Path of the Higher Self."
and Mother Meera offers her mantra for access to Her causal help, in "Answers."
Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov offers some good mantras in his books, and Jonathan Murro in his "Path of Virtue."

Thich Nhat Hanh was my first Master, and I have taken the following vows, or precepts. Everyday after meditation I read them aloud..

    The Fourteen Precepts from Interbeing

    Thich Nhat Hanh
    1. Do not be idolatrous about or bound to any doctrine, theory, or ideology, even Buddhist ones. Buddhist systems of thought are guiding means; they are not absolute truth.

    2. Do not think the knowledge you presently possess is changeless, absolute truth. Avoid being narrow-minded and bound to present views. Learn and practice nonattachment from views in order to be open to receive others' viewpoints. Truth is found in life and not merely in conceptual knowledge. Be ready to learn throughout your entire life and to observe reality in yourself and
in the world at all times.

    3. Do not force others, including children, by any means whatsoever, to adopt your views, whether by authority, threat, money, propaganda, or even education. However, through compassionate dialogue, help others renounce fanaticism and narrowness.

    4. Do not avoid contact with suffering or close your eyes before suffering. Do not lose awareness of the existence of suffering in the life of the world. Find ways to be with those who are suffering, including personal contact, visits, images, and sounds. By such means, awaken yourself and others to the reality of suffering in the world.

    5. Do not accumulate wealth while millions are hungry. Do not take as the aim of your life fame, profit, wealth, or sensual pleasure. Live simply and share time, energy, and material resources with those who are in need.

    6. Do not maintain anger or hatred. Learn to penetrate and transform them when they are still seeds in your consciousness. As soon as they arise, turn your attention to your breath in order to see and understand the nature of your anger and hatred and the nature of the persons who have caused your anger and hatred.

    7. Do not lose yourself in dispersion and in your surroundings. Practice mindful breathing to come back to what is happening in the present moment. Be in touch with what is wondrous, refreshing and healing both inside and around you. Plant seeds of joy, peace, and understanding in yourself in order to facilitate the work of transformation in the depths of your consciousness.

    8. Do not utter words that can create discord and cause the community to break. Make every effort to reconcile and resolve all conflicts however small.

    9. Do not say untruthful things for the sake of personal interest or to impress people. Do not utter words that cause division and hatred. Do not spread news that you do not know to be certain. Do not criticize or condemn things of which you are not sure. Always speak truthfully and constructively. Have the courage to speak out about situations of injustice, even when doing so may threaten your own safety.

    10. Do not use the Buddhist community for personal gain or profit, or transform your community into a political party. A religious community, however, should take a clear stand against oppression and injustice and should strive to change the situation without engaging in partisan conflicts.

    11. Do not live with a vocation that is harmful to humans and nature. Do not invest in companies that deprive others of their chance to live. Select a vocation that helps realize your ideal of compassion.

    12. Do not kill. Do not let others kill. Find whatever means possible to protect life and prevent war.

    13. Possess nothing that should belong to others. Respect the property of others, but prevent others from profiting from human suffering or the suffering of other species on Earth.

    14. Do not mistreat your body. Learn to handle it with respect. Do not look on your body as only an instrument. Preserve vital energies (sexual, breath, spirit) for the realization of the Way. (For brothers and sisters who are not monks and nuns:) Sexual expression should not take place without love and a long term commitment. In sexual relationships, be aware of future suffering
that may be caused. To preserve the happiness of others, respect the rights and commitments of others. Be fully aware of the responsibility of bringing new lives into the world. Meditate on the world into which you are bringing new beings.

Yes, I do have one who has helped me a lot throughout the years.

"Lord help me to realize that there is nothing that you and I can handle because without you I am weak", I remember once when I went Grocery shopping, it was getting dark outside as I was pushing the cart full of a whole month of food that was for my Family in an instant, there was this guy in front of me, who told me if I would give him a ride to his car and five bucks, for Gas. I remember that in that instant I was very scared for myself, so I told him that I did not carry any cash but if he would give me a minute I would go back to the store and buy some candy and they would give me cash back.
As soon as I said that I bowed my Head and said this prayer to God almighty to come to my rescue and as soon as I lifted my eyes, the Guy had gone running.
Was it divine intervention? I would say yes, because I later learned that this guy had done it before to other People and he would even hurt them if they did not give him the Money he asked.
