Always put yourself in other's shoes.
If you feel that it hurts you,
it probably does hurt the person too.

Try to put yourself in the other person's shoes. For instance, that bully may be mean because his parents are going through a divorce. We don't always know what is going on in someone else's private life, so give them the benefit of the doubt.

Empathy is a skill that majority of the people don't have, actually don't even know about empathy. Here's a definition of empathy:
"The imaginative projection into another's feelings, a state of total identification with another's situation, condition, and thoughts. The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without explicitly articulating these feelings"
In other words, empathy is the ability to "put yourself in other's shoes". Trying to understand other's viewpoints, trying to see the world from where the other stands.
