Dear Atheist Brothers and Sisters, why do you disagree with the professor ?

Question

Professor: “ Dear students, in my previous lecture we discussed how the Universe came into being. Any Doubts ? Anyone ?”

Ralph : “ Sir! I very well understood the theory of Big Bang which you explained to us in your previous lecture. But Sir, why did the Big Bang took place ?”

Professor: “ Well the answers to this lies in Religious Scriptures. Science can tell you why things function the way they do but Religion will tell you the wisdom behind the happenings. As a professor of science I have no answers to the wisdom behind the creation of this Universe”


How far do you agree with what the professor said ? Does Science really fail in explaining the wisdom behind the facts known to science ? Please share your views on this.

All you believers first thought the earth was flat, science proved it was round (almost). Science cannot answer your question completely at present. But wait and give science time it will bring the truth out, which will be totally different than your widest imagination.

The error - and it is a bad one!! Is in attributing any sort of wisdom to the big bang!!

Science explains the big bang was not from nothing but from a singularity that was all the matter and energy in the universe compressed into a single point that then expanded rapidly!!

Just as on Earth the super continents of Gondwanaland and Pangaea show that the land masses became a single mass and split several times and the process can be shown to be continuing today!!

It is therefore about inevitable events and wisdom has nothing to do with it as that requires conscious thought!!

The professor should hand in his mortar board and get back to the basics in the classroom!!

I don't even know what "the wisdom behind the facts known to science" means. Exactly what is he referring to? I do not think there is very much wisdom to be gleaned from bronze-age scribbles chosen to be bound into an anthology by committee.
I think the question of "why did X happen" is often meaningless and unanswerable, it is the result of our desire to give some sort of moral reason to situations which are really about physics. When a stone falls, it obeys gravity, that's the reason. The big bang happened because that's what the laws of physics dictated it do - there is no "why" other than that.

Science doesn't even address the question of "why." It tells us "how." I agree with the professor. People have to turn to religion if they want to know the reasoning behind life. I haven't seen science even attempt to answer that question. It serves no purpose for science to go beyond actualities.

You fail to mention what type of institution (religious or secular) as well as what course the professor is teaching. Both are important to the argument.

Assuming you mean secular and a science class, the argument fails when the professor states, AS FACT (as the statement is presented here) that scripture holds the answers. While true that science will explain why things occurred (in relation to sequences of events), and how they occurred, the professor loses all credibility by working from the unsubstantiated basis that there is a "wisdom" at work.

For the record, no scientist worth his credentials would EVER posit that there is a spiritual meaning behind cosmic events. It is belief only, and has zero basis in fact.

Science does not deal with why, only how. It is up to the individual to determine any whys, or if there is any need for a why.

Science fails at this the same way my bicycle fails at painting a room, it was never meant to explain the whys of the universe.

If there's a cause for everything, what was the Cause for God? And if God didn't need a Cause, why does the universe need a Cause? Consider that the universe, not God, could have been mysteriously first.

I've heard it said that 80% of questions are actually statements, disguised as questions. And so I don't believe this was an actual exchange between a real student and a professor, but merely a rhetorical device in which to state your beliefs under the pretense of curiosity about the beliefs of others. And that's my view. (Which could be wrong.)

The professor is a creationist and will never be taken seriously by his peers. Also he is obviously teaching at a religious school, as evidenced by his religious bias when it comes to genuine scientific scholarship.

Religion is a collection of myths, they were attempts by people who lived in the bronze age to explain what they at the time did not understand.

Besides, there are so many religions that say so many different things you cannot take an objective view on them

I'm not an atheist but I imagine the question "Why did the Big Bang take place?" would be considered nonsensical. It doesn't fall in the realm of reason, but that of spirituality and emotion. Why would an atheist ask that? (And if they don't ask the question, the answer would be irrelevant.) Most atheists rely on science, and science doesn't ask why we're here, it doesn't look for life's meaning in that sense, it asks
"How?"
"For what purposes do processes function?"
"What's the end or the benefit of such a process?"
"What's the rationale?"
... etc.

"Wisdom behind" implies a consciousness, which implies a creator-type God. No, I do not agree with the professor on that. But I agree that science can tell you how something happened, but not why, in the philosophical sense. Cause and effect sequences of why do not include first causes. If you say the Big Bang was the first cause, then you still have the question of what caused the Big Bang. You say God, I say natural laws, but neither one of us really knows.

I'm a theist, not an atheist so you already know my answer probably. The professor is probably right. The only thing that nothingness has ever created is more nothingness. It takes an outside force to create something.
