I guess it means that you are making the journey or getting the job done, but as you do so you are taking note of what happens along the way - does that make sense?

Transitions (crossing the river) are difficult. One needs to step on rocks (which are unseen) underwater, to have a good footing, lest he gets stuck in mud or falls into a hole in the river bed.
