Why do we need to arrest Arundhati Roy and try her in court? Why don't people just disregard her opinions and cut down her exaggerated sense of self importance? Let her continue with her blabber. In a democracy, everyone has the right to his/her opinion. But the government will consider only the most sensible opinion. Another name that comes to mind in the context of Arundhati Roy is that of Shabana Azmi. She is a social crusader for all causes that go against the inherent grain of Indian traditional values.
Arundhati Roy or Shabana Azmi would do far better if they were to devote themselves wholeheartedly to literary pursuits or acting.
Incidentally, a lot of Indian personalities think that their associations with raging issues add extra dimensions of popularity to their personae. Many just associate themselves to a cause to gain extra mileage, to hog more limelight. There is very little sincerity in their association with the cause. The sponsors of such causes are also glad to have personalities in their ranks, as such associations supposedly add extra weight to the issue they are trying to propagate. Thus, the benefits of such associations accrue both ways, with only the people for whom such causes are espoused being left in the lurch.
In the USA, Noam Chomsky champions left wing, liberal values. He believes that much of the US government's actions are wrong and directed against the interests of the common people. He has his own bunch of followers. Chomsky's observations are like sweet music to the governments and the people of underdeveloped nations, as their aspirations and interests often clash with that of America's. Maybe there is a grain of substance in what Chomsky says, but it is almost nearly always against American mainstream interests. In the US itself, Chomsky is a largely marginalised man. Yet the US has no problems with Chomsky, even though many of his words are supposedly highly embarassing for the government there. Mainstream America disregards Chomsky with unspoken disdain. Hence there is no loss of comfort either for Chomsky or the US government.
The same silent disregard is the befitting response to Arundhati Roy's supposed sympathies for the Jihadis in Kashmir or Mumbai.
