Backstroke. Yes!
Use these to practice each part of your stroke:
Kick:
-kick on your back with your hands under the small of your back, this will lift your hips so they are not dragging and you are not trying to swim vertically in the water
-kick in streamlined position (fingers, hands and wrists over top of each other, arms pinned to the sides of your head--no superman's!) on your back
-kick on your side (make sure to practice both sides) with your bottom arm above your head and your top arm at your side; or for a more advanced drill, raise your top arm and point it at the ceiling which will make you work harder to stay afloat
-kick on your back with your hands at your sides, rolling on a count of 6 or 12 so that your shoulder comes to your chin; remember to keep your head still and make your body roll as a unit (shoulders and hips together)
**a good strong dolphin kick (like a butterfly kick) off the wall at the start of your race will add speed and distance
Arms-follow Code's advice, but one extra note is to try to make your hands enter at about 11 and 1 (on an analog clock), this should be just outside your shoulders; don't let your arms cross so that they are entering over your head or over your opposite shoulder
