During Diwali it is not just the people at home who groom themselves for the occasion. The whole house gets a new look. I mean, the works ... Whitewash, repainting, garden also gets a new look with winter season plants like roses, oysters, nastratiums saplings being planted. They usually grow into flowering blooms by December.
After the house gets its sparkling look, and all the dirt and dust, cobwebs etc have been cleaned up, you settle down to welcome Diwali D Day.
We buy new garlends for the idols in our temple. The "Mandir" is decorated. Early morning on Diwali day, you perform your ritual baths as usual, wear new clothes whenever possible [its not a big deal now anymore] and get sweets for the evening puja. Oil lamps are lighted in evening around the Shubh mahoorat time, and greetings and sweets are exchanged with family and neighbours.
Fire crackers too have become minimum now. Pollution consciousness, and besides it is a waste of your hard earned money. Hence No.
