How far can a laptop travel from a house?

like im on 68th street, and i go to like 84th street. can it travel like that far from my house to a friend with internet?

Wireless G in the best of circumstances works at about 1600 feet.

Wireless N is SUPPOSED to transmit and receive at 3 times that, but actually only goes about 2000 to 2400 feet.

Now, I've gotten 1600 feet or better... HOWEVER, and this is important, soft materials absorb wireless signal. This would include wood, trees, drywall, shingles, furniture, people, etc. So a building between you and your router would severely limit your range.

Your laptop itself can go anywhere. If you have a wireless card (which most come standard with nowadays) you can jump on people's wireless internet. However, most wireless signals are encrypted and you will need to know the password for it. There are some free WiFi spots (also known as hot spots) at Starbucks, McDonalds, etc. If your friend has wireless internet then you can ask them for the password if it's encrypted.

You will loose the router wireless signal. Router signal depends on electrical interference from appliances, walls etc. and distance from the router, most routers loose signal strength the farther you get from the router. Most signals are good from point blank to between 25 and 2500 feet depending on the a/b/g/n version and the quality of the router.

Not far. Maybe fifty feet or so, depending on the router.

G routers have the shortest signals, N has the longest.

Even with this, I still can't get signal from my N1 when I'm downstairs and ten feet away in the living room. Walls and ceilings definitely hinder things.

Well, you can probably find someone else's WiFi if you're on the street - but traveling to a different street I can almost guarantee that you will not be able to use your own house's WiFi.

if you are using wireless card then there is no problem... but if you want to keep yourself connected with your router located in your home then max 300 yards that too depending upon your router signal output...
