I agree with everyone here, most of the hype is media driven. Andrew Symonds has said in plenty of interviews that he wasn't offended by the 'monkey' insults, but the media blew it out of proportion and it ended up in the ICC tribunal. There are certain players that different crowds love to give a bit of crap to. Symonds and Ponting seem to attract a bit of love from the indian crowds, and Ponting seems to have plenty of fans in England as well. In Australia, i know whenever Murli (no idea how to spell his actual name, or even his nickname...) comes on to bowl the crowd yells 'no ball' just as he bowls. Its a joke, and it amuses everyone, but at the same time everyone is in awe of him because hes the greatest wicket taker of all time.
There are players on every team that wear it from opposition crowds, and that's the same in every sport. Its just the way it goes, and 99% its water off a ducks back for those players. In many ways, copping **** from opposition crowds in the ultimate sign of respect.
