Ganesh, you are only a student now. You do not need PAN.

PAN will be necessary once you start earning your wages/salaries/business income/rent from property etc.

No one bars you from applying for a PAN. Visit the office of UTI Technological Services or NSDL or simply contact Alankit Services or Karvy. They will put you in the way.

There is very simple procedure and a very little fee to get Your PAN at home within 15 days. Just follow the following steps

1) Download form 49A.

2) Fill form after reading all instruction on the backside of this form.

3) Attached Required Documents

4) Go to Your city TIN centers and give your filled form with fees i.e. Rs. 95/-

5) Check the address of your city TIN Center (http://www.tin-nsdl.com)

6) Take Acknowledgment from TIN Center of 15 digit Number.

6) And your PAN will be at your home within 15days.

Now regarding income Tax for the PAN holder. It is not must to file Income Tax returns if you do not have a taxable income (<1,60,000). Having a PAN card dose not mean that the PAN holder must file return.

Just go to any Integrated Finance office, with a proof of your address and a photo ID and about Rs. 100. Apply and be ready to receive your PAN card in about 2 weeks.

No, unless you have some taxable income. Being a student is not an excuse for not paying income-tax, if you have taxable income!

No relation between PAN card and Income tax liability . You will have to pay tax if your income is taxable even if you do not have PAN Card . Just visit Unit Trust and complete the form.
