• How does one survive on $2,000/month in Los Angeles, CA?

I already looked at 500 different careers. There aren't any that pay well enough to live on except in computers, healthcare or perhaps a vocational trade. A friend suggested I can move into someone's garage for $500/month. Would that be possible? Advice Please

I started this job roughly 7 months ago. During the interview process I was told that if I took the job I would be promoted when the next spot opens up. I agreed to take the position under those terms. In my job description, I was given two jobs that I would need to do. I exceeded their expectations. A few months pass and my General Manager has mentioned that he has plans for me. He tells me he wants to put me in one of two potential positions on multiple occassions. One position is the one I asked for in the intervew, and I told him that's what I wanted. He once again agreed to have me fill the spot when it is open. I'm ecstatic and optomistic about this and continue to put in hard work and extra hours to prove my dedication to this company. Last month he hired another person who recieved the position that I wanted. He moved my desk and gave it to a seasoned employee. He said he needs me where I am at now. I explained that if this was his plan, I would have not taken the job in the first place. I feel as if I have become irreppacable in my position to this company. Not only have I exceeded the expectations that were originally given to me I took on an additional 10 different roles within the company. I took a significant amount of weight off of management's shoulders in order to prove my worth as an employee. Now I'm at a crossroads.. Should I ask for a raise? Should I throw in the towel? Give me your best advice.. Thank you, Anonymous frustrated employee.

During our huddle I had it made up in my mind that I’d keep my headphones on when my boss spoke. She asked me to join the huddle and I unenthusiasticly said sure. She laughed. They had food day today and I brought my own food and didn’t eat what they had. I then told her that she might be getting a call from a place I applied to and interviewed with and made sure it was ok I used her as a reference. She said thanks for heads up and that’s fine. I was notified later in the day that she didn’t want me to come back tomorrow but I would still get paid until Friday. Why would she do this? I’m thinking she thought it was a waste of time for both of us.

Is it possible for an employee to transfer from one department of a business into the HR department? I am asking because I am a college student that will be graduating in a year. I am interested in pursuing a career in HR but I heard that because I already work for the company in another department, there would be ethical concerns if I sought out a position in the HR department because of the connections and relationships I've established with other staff. This sounds logical, but can anyone confirm this type of scenario? Thanks!

You are old enough to educate yourself about budgets and life-choices. Suze Orman has some good thoughts regarding finances, so maybe read up a bit with her or watch her tv show. You will find that parents do not and never did know everything. Getting out of California is probably not a bad idea to start. It is too expensive. Do some research to find where you might want to live and work. Hint: the southeast is pretty much the least expensive. Go where you have a fighting chance and won't have to struggle so much.

If I may start a full time job that would occasionally make me 10 or 20 minutes late? What if I may sometimes be a little bit late? The temp job is as a test grader.

My parents pushed me to apply for another job. The manager who interviewed me wanted me to start immediately but I told him I needed to give notice to my present employer, he wasn't happy but he agreed. I've already given notice to my present employer. Yesterday I talked to a barber who is ready to retire and when I told him I had graduated the 2 year program and had my barber license, he asked if I would want to take over his shop. He said I could work with him a few months, then he's going to retire and maybe work a little part time, but he wants to travel and be gone weeks at a time. He said he would rent to me then if it works out, do a rent to own. It's what I want to do. I've never seen my dad so angry before, he totally went on a rage. He seems to think I can make more money working as a janitor for $10/hr. I told him guys crap on the floor in the restroom and I have to go clean it up. I'm days away from having to go start my new janitor job and I refuse......I won't do it and nobody can make me. Would it be better to just not show up or give notice right after I start? I won't be going back to my present job.

If a job says that they've chosen to go in a different direction after a job interview but if there was a change in availability to let them know, what does that mean? It's been a few days since I last talked to the person who interviewed me.

Are they saying that if a 19 year old picks up a job at McDonald's, the basic employment history is more valuable than the degree itself?
