As much as you'd like to believe you'll land in Alaska, seasoned travelers understand that we don't always land where we expected.

For example, even though you're booked for Alaska, weather might dictate that you land in Vancouver, BC. And there you are, entering a foreign country without a passport.

And to make matters worse, your flight into Alaska will now originate from Canada. Which means you'll be flying into the USA from a foreign country. Again, the passport would be useful.

I always fly with my passport even though all the flights are within the USA. Why not? They don't take up much room and they are sure ways to provide ID information if asked for some reason. Like coming back into the States after a weather diversion into Ontario for example.

If you like Fresno you might also look at Sacramento. It's also a central valley town, about the same size, but with a more diverse, more vital economy, plus it's only 1 hr to San Francisco, the Gold Country, the coast, etc.

I have noticed something about these "compact" places: housing costs tend to be higher and housing choices are physically smaller and fewer overall choices for middle income folks.
