How do I become a soccer player?

After playing two years of high school soccer, I’ve decided to go pro in playing soccer but where do I start if I just finished high school? And is two years fine or would I need more time to join a college team?

Why do British people think only Americans call it soccer?

    Favourite answer:

Some people take a very ‘superior’ attitude for this issue. At last Count eleven nations call the game soccer. In these countries, they already have a national game with the word ‘football’ in it.

Having grown up with both American games, it takes me about five seconds to figure out which game someone is talking about. I wish people could just get over it!

Soccer is growing in America but the it would never be a champion unless it changes its culture?

    Favourite answer:

There is room for the 'big 4' US sports and MLS.  There is no reason to try to convince NFL fans which is better.  To each their own.

To your comments about MLS, the league is only 25 years old.  It's actually quite remarkable how it's grown and progressed in that time period.  Everything you say needs to happen has been happening for a number of years.  It is now attracting top talent from Mexico and other leagues in Central & South America.  This includes older players, but also young talent. MLS for years has exported talent.  The next 5 years it's clear we're going to see more and more spending.  MLS has for many years exported talent, both Americans/Canadian and foreign players with MLS owned contracts, to Europe.  That should continue.

Every MLS team has development teams where they find and develop local talent.  Many of those players play on MLS first teams now.

The US has a 2nd Division called USL along with several D3 and below leagues.  Some are regional.  Some are national.

Remember, sports in the US are not like other countries.  England is basically the size of California.  The longest travel distance for the Premier league this year is Newcastle with a total of 4444 miles.  Compare that to the SMALLEST total miles for MLS of 25,862 for Columbus and the largest of 51,210 for Vancouver.  San Jose doesn't have a team within 400 miles of it!  That has its own challenges with not just fatigue but also attracting players in general.

As for Boston, that's an issue for Kraft.  While he was instrumental in creating and developing the league from day one, it's obvious he doesn't care about the Revolution as much as he could.  Get them a proper downtown stadium, buy a few good European players, and there could be some real support.

Why do some MLS clubs have "Football Club" instead of "Soccer Club" in their name?

    Favourite answer:

Some will say that it is designed to appeal to a more "worldly" audience...others will say that it's designed to appeal to a more pretentious audience (the ones that think wearing scarves, calling uniforms "kits" and chanting in unison makes them "cooler" than "regular sports fans")

In any case, it does seem to be a move to make the American game more in line with the international one.  Part of this, I believe, is an effort to attract a higher caliber of younger international players (and keep our best players home), to improve the quality (and therefore marketability) of the MLS.

    Soccer and sprinting?

    Favourite answer:

You need both good sprinting speed and endurance.  I'd say it is more about interval training.  You sprint for a bit, jog for a bit, stand around a bit, sprint for a while, and so on.  Dedicated sprinters tend to carry a lot more muscle around.  That wouldn't work for a game like football (soccer) because you have to cover a lot more ground.  So while it involves some sprinting, it's not all about sprinting.

What do you think of “flopping” in soccer?

    Favourite answer:

    It ruins the sport.

Apart from American football/rugby... soccer was always my favorite and I was a very avid participant... running by my own estimation probably 8 miles a match...

When I watch "pro" soccer and the dudes diving not even caring that there is instant, slow-mo replay and grasping their face or ankle when the defender was about 20 feet away... it just makes it a very boycott-able "sport" or perhaps in the realm of WWE.

    It's very dorky and ridiculous.

I get it... athletest want an advantage... want to win... but going THAT shameless is just really weird and gross to me.

I haven't watched "pro" soccer for a long time... but I remember playing it in a mini league and when it is kept real... without refs and just based on general consensus... it's an awesome sport.

Would soccer enjoy a soccer game if it was 4 quarters of 20 minutes each quarter?

Would soccer fans find it more interesting to watch a soccer game if it was 4 quarters of 20 minutes each quarter similar to American foot ball with commercials?

Might be more socializing about the game during the breaks and more analysis.

Is it mandatory for Goalies to have goalie pants or sliding pants, or can you just wear the shorts that are provided with your team?

Why are Latin America and Western Europe so good at football?

    Favourite answer:

Because there are a lot of people playing there from a very young age. It doesn't take a lot of equipment or money to play. Also, it's the most popular sport; there isn't a lot of dilution from people going to other sports.
