Very good question. Kerala is called God's own country for three reasons.

#1. According to Hindu mythology, Kerala was created by Lord Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu by throwing his axe across the sea to create new land for his devotees to live peacefully. So, Kereala is God's own creation, hence it is called God's own country!

#2 Every nook and corner in Kerala you will see Hindu temples, Muslim mosques and Christian Churches; and unlike many other parts of India, people live happily without communal riots and great religiuos tolerance. Hence it is God's own country full of worship places!

#3 Nestled between the pristine waters of the Arabian sea on the west and the lush Western Ghat mountains on the east, its intense network of rivers and lagoons, thick forests, exotic wildlife, tranquil stretches of emerald backwaters and a long shoreline of serene beaches make it a traveler's paradise. God's own country! Paradire :)

Kerala is nice place like most of the people her have pointed out here, but the term 'god's own country' was used by the Kerala tourism to develop tourism. It was taken from New Zealand which calls itself gods own country. And about the 'devils own people' part, I think there is a feeling that people in Kerala are generally rude and unfriendly. I am not sure if its true. I am a Keralite myself and I am really nice :P. Jokes apart there are bad people all over the world and don't really think Keralites are 'devils own people'.

Entire land in Malabar was owned by temples. Those in the helm of affairs of such temples were the Rulers or Rajas. They leased the lands to upper caste Hindus or/and few Muslims called Jenmis on terms like payment of rent. They sub leased such lands to tenants ( usually a lower caste or poor Hindu or others)The Kerala Land Refoms Act removed all such systems. Now, some temples are getting a nominal amount as annuity. Start from Kasargod and feel the fact.Actually,Malabar is the real Gods own Country as the entire land was owned by Gods/Temples.

The ancient Kerala was ruled by benevolent Rakshasa king Mahabali, He was such an exalted person who loved his subjects so dearly, he gave away every thing he possessed like a benevolent God! That is why it is called , God s own country!!

When Lord Vishnu pushed him to patala , he gave a boon to mahabali that he would personally guard him there! But in that process Mahabali left his non benevolent rakshasa subjects in Kerala, whom he visits on ThiruOnam day. That is why it is called Inhabited by Devils own people!

The keralites are good masters of hospitality too. Naturally, the visitors feel very comfortable when they land on this soil. The Kerala society has a neat track on health and hygienic awareness. They do take bath every day and most of them do it twice a day. Keralites' love for bath is, in fact, an interesting topic for discussion everywhere in India. The people also prefer to drink hot water thanks to their high health consciousness.
