There are about 27,000 places in the U.S. and 304 million people. Based on a world population of 6.7 billion, there are close to 600,000 cities, towns, villages, hamlets etc. in the world.

There are 650,000 villages (towns and cities included) in India for a polulation of 1billion+. That is a sixth of world population. On the same scale, there should be

    6 X 650,000 = 3,900,000

villages, towns and cities in world.

The earth is not a mathematical problem. If I declare my bedroom "Daniel Huthville" tonight then the guy with the right answer will be one off. If I close down the city tomorrow, the numbers will have to be revised. I would guess that there is roughly one planet that we live on.
