What is the best Windows virus, spyware removal program? Norton or McAfee? Or something else?

I have "Spy Guard 2008" on my computer (I do believe it's malicious spyware stuff) and I need to get rid of it and it's components. I want to BUY a top notch virus cleaner/protector for WINDOWS XP. I haven't had a paid subscription to virus protection for a couple years now. I need something spectacular that will clean my computer and protect me.

Should I buy Norton or McAfee? Which versions? Or is there something else out there that would fit my situation? Please be honest, and I appreciate your help! :)

I think the one I have installed on my computer is McAfee, but it hasn't been renewed since I first bought my computer.

Update 2:

Any sites that have to do with virus protection WON'T LOAD! It keeps saying "page error"....what does this mean?!?!

Update 3:

Tried installing the search and destroy this message:

"error sending request.

a connection with the server could not be established."

Update 4:

Please email me at for any more info if you already answered the question :)

NO anti-virus can ever be relied upon to give any where near 100% protection. None of them do, free or paid. Most only detect about 90 to 95% of all KNOWN viruses. When a brand new virus is released, NO signature-based anti-virus will detect it for several hours up to several days. Some never will detect a particular virus. And over 1200 new variants of viruses and other malware are created by the "black-hats" each and every day. You should consider an anti-virus program to be your "last line of defense". Safe internet surfing and downloading practices (NO warez, NO P2P, NO Limewire, NO torrents, sorry) along with maintaining your Windows and all your installed software with all critical updates and security patches should be your frontline defense.

When want total protection you get an internet security program. They however are not free. With the exeption of Comodo Internet Security. LInk you find below.

When you just look for an anti virus program, you should not pay for one.

There are plenty of good anti virus programs for free.

I use a combination of a couple of different free programs for protection against anti virus and anti spyware

    Anti virus and firewall pro

Threatfire is an anti virus, that can be installed next to any other anti virus program on the same computer

This is a very good program, that completely runs in the background

    Anti spyware

I have used Spyware Doctor for over two years and my laptop has been completely spyware free during that time. Plus, it has won several awards as well.

I've also recommended it to several of my friends and they LOVE it!

Here's a great website where you can read more about Spyware Doctor and also view a comparison chart of some of the top spyware removers.

Go for Norton. It is the only one that is keeping the new virus out the others are not, check it out on Snopes.

You can get really good results from FREE spyware removers. Spybot S&D, AdAware from Lavasoft, and Avast antivirus (free with registration). These tools have worked well for me and others. Try these solutions before you buy anything.

    Avoid Norton and McAfee.

Both are heavy and will slow down your system. They can cause no end of problems too.

Try AVG, or Kaspersky, or Avast or similar.
