Is there a difference between protecting your kids and taking care of them?

Coz I am English and I find the American use of 'protect' too intense against the use of 'taking care'

Is there any inner intent as well or just usage

"taking care of" implies feeding, clothing and sending off to school

"protecting" implies covering the pool, installing safety gates for the very young, putting a lock on the gun cabinet, hiding the ammunition, enforcing the curfew, that kind of thing
