# How to find the value of log (0.5)?

I know that its quite simple and i know how to use log.

But the problem is that i am getting two different answers while trying to solve it by two different methods.

1st Method:-

log (0.5)= log (1/2)= log1-log2= 0-log2= -0.3010

2nd Method:-

Normally solving the log.

Characteristic is -1 while the mantissa is 0.6991

so, log (0.5)= -1.6991

Why there are 2 answers..which one is correct and WHY??

Surely give 10 points to best answer and thats my promise..

log0.5 = log1/2

= log (2)^-1

= - log2 = - 0.3010 answer-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i.e. -0,3010 = -1.6991 [ -1 is called BAR one ]

in -1.6991 there are two parts[ bar one (- 1) ]one is minus while 0.6991 is positive

so -- 1 + 0.6991 = --03010

1st method is correct.

2nd method should be: -1+0.6991

LOG(0.5)

= LOG(5 X 10^-1)

= LOG(5) + LOG(10^-1)

= LOG(5) + (-1)LOG(10)

= LOG(5) + (-1)(1)

= LOG(5) - 1

= -0.301.
