What are all the possible alkane isomers that contain 4 carbon atoms and a bromine?

    All 4-carbon alkobromines are isomers of bromobutane. Normal butane has two different carbon where the bromine can bond: 1 and 2 (note that 3 is the same as 2 and 4 is the same as 1).

    You can have 1-bromobutane or 2-bromobutane.

    Next, look at the more substituted butanes. You can have iso-bromobutane or tert-bromobutane.

    Also, note that 2-bromobutane is chiral due to the central carbon having a Br, H, CH3, and CH2CH3 group attached (all different).

    Thus, the list of bromobutanes is:

    1-bromobutane

    (R)-2-bromobutane

    (S)-2-bromobutane

    isobromobutane (1-bromo-2-methylpropane)

    tertbromobutane (2-bromo-2-methylpropane)

    This is a total of 5 isomers.

    Try it. There are only 4.

    Unless you mean cyclic compounds too. (That would be 4 more)

    Unless you mean optical isomers too. (That would be 2 More)

    Kinda blows up on you, doesn't it!
