Potassium reacts with ethanol to produce potassium ethoxide. It is not usual to produce the anhydrous solid. Instead the material is typically prepared in a solution with ethanol. It is commercially available in this form. It is easily prepared in the laboratory by treating potassium metal with ethanol:

    2 C2H5OH + 2 K → 2 C2H5OK + H2
