Is it cheaper to make your own stretched canvases?

No. The only benefit is you can make odd sizes to suit your project rather than settling for the standard sizes
available in stores. I'd rather adjust to the standard sizes personally.

Yes, but you need to consider your time also. You buy these huge rolls of canvas, the stretcher bars, a heavy-duty staple gun, and also a stretcher tool if you want. How much cheaper.. you do the math.
