Is there a simply way for my girlfriend to keep her too-large engagement ring and get it resized a little while later?

I had an idea that she could use a colored elastic ring that was the correct size so it didn't fall off.

Any jeweler will have an adjustable ring guard in stock which fits onto a band and makes the ring smaller. My MIL used them on all her rings as she got old and tiny.

My ex tied her promise rings with a necklace chain. Don't know if that's because she was ashamed, but I would say it's a good way of doing it.
