aac/m4a is a format developed to run on Apple products - a typical Windows laptop won't contain software that can play it because it'd mean they have to pay some kind of licensing fees to Apple.

To get m4a working on Windows Media Player you need to install the K-lite codec pack. Or you could install a decent media player like VLC. Converting them to mp3 sounds like more hassle than it's worth - convert every song, or just get set up so you can play them as standard.

    Change the extension to .m4a

Most media players can change formats.
