The Muslims and Hindu's were fighting which eventually resulted in the country being split up between India a Hindu state and Pakistan a Muslim state. There were many other factions in India also such as the Sikhs who often fight fight with the Hindus and the Communists who were always trying to take over India.

Possibly you mean "major groups fighting WITHIN India at the time of independence and partition". No outside groups were fighting India at that time.

Muslims and Hindus were the main opposing groups in India at that time, which is why India was partitioned into India and Pakistan (and East Pakistan, which became Bangladesh 25 years later).
