He was competent. That doesn't mean he was "good". He created the United Kingdom, complete with Union Jack flag to represent the union of Scotland and Ireland under the English crown and its legal and economic systems. Anecdotally, he sponsored the English translation of the Christian Bible that bears his name to this day, and expanded colonization in North America. As a king, James I was very competent, though disliked. As a human being, he was very flawed.
