Why do some still go into the ocean when sharks are biting people?
today on the news, I heard an 8 year old boy was in the ocean and a shark was biting him. I rather stay out of the ocean. when I was growing up, you did not hear of sharks biting people

They don't care... don't even follow precautions to lessen chances of being bitten.
Sharks don't want to eat humans, just mistake them for other food sources.
We had two kids (teens) get their arms bitten off in the same hour several years ago.
Closed the beaches down..had cops going to each access and people were legit refusing to get out of the water. Predominantly tourists who left their brains at home.

Why do people still drive when there are so many accidents on the road?

People still drive cars even though hundreds of accidents happen every day.

There aren't too many sharks at the beaches where I live.
I remember seeing a shark at the beach a long time ago.

Some people have the "it could never happen to me" philosophy.

They rationally weigh up the odds of that actually happening and are, hopefully, smart enough to not go in when sharks are more likely to be feeding.
Update: more chance of being hit by a car. That's why when it happens it makes the news.

Because they think it's rare to get attacked by a shark. It's the third known shark bite off North Carolina's coast in June.
