Pre Calc Question?

A building has a ramp to its front doors to accommodate the handicapped. If the distance from the building to the end of the ramp is 13 feet and the height from the ground to the front doors is 5 feet, how long is the ramp? (Round to the nearest tenth.)

    the trick here is to do the actual work instead of automatically thinking of the 5 12 13 combo.

    a² + b² = c²

    The longest distance will be c, and that happens to be the length of the ramp

    Doesn't matter if 13 is a or b, the answer will be the same.

    13² + 5² = c²

    169 + 25 = c²

    194 = c²

    To solve for c, take the square root of 194

    It equals 13.928

    The horizontal side is 13. The vertical side of the right triangle is 5. Use the pythagorean theorem. 5^2 + 13^2 =C^2 C is your answer! Do the calculation and find C!
