Why does reverent John Hagee think that people should tithe?

Contrary to some here, it is not Hagee's "opinion" that Christians ought to tithe. He strongly links it to a Christian's obligation and God's "plan for your prosperity." According to Hagee, "when you plant your seed (tithe and offering), God not only meets your need, but rains down His blessing on every area of your life. He is the God of more than enough!" "Giving is the only proof you have that the cancer of greed has not consumed you. The day is going to come when all you will have is what you have given to God." "Givers gain! When you give to God, the only thing that can happen is for you to gain on every level. Beloved, He wants to prosper you in all things. Are you willing to trust Him with the little that is in your hand, for the untold blessings in His?" [John Hagee Ministries]
Of note is his comment that giving money to God "is the only proof you have that the cancer of greed has not consumed you." What an extraordinary thing to say. It is almost like saying "Chopping off your left hand is the only proof you have that you appreciate the right hand."
I would venture to say that Hagee preaches the prosperity plan and, by extension, the obligatory tithe, because he is greedy.

If the invisible magical sky daddy needs money so bad, then maybe he needs to come on down to Earth, start a business, offer an IPO and start making his own money instead of waiting around for other people to do it for him. How about that?

To get his hands on the money. For years I paid literal 10% tithes to a church. Then I found out that this church was fraudulent in different ways. I stopped paying the tithes, and was amazed at how much better off I was! They had made the same promises that John Hagee is making, Tithing is an Old Covenant law, not meant for our times.

Because he's a false teacher that should be avoided. The believer in Jesus is under grace, not under any of the law, which means, no tithing.
Giving is if you want to (2 Corinthians 9:7).
The truth is that death leads to immediate heaven or hell, depending only on whether the person believed in Jesus for eternal life, or not.
The truth is that Jesus loves you and wants to bless your life freely :) Most of all, Jesus wants you with Him forever, and not in hell. The truth is that every belief except one will lead to eternal torment in the lake of fire for every person. Because nothing pays for our sins except the death and blood of Jesus, the sacrifice of Jesus that is already accomplished by Him . Jesus loves you! The truth is that Jesus is God, and Jesus died on the cross to pay for all of our sins in full, and then Jesus resurrected from the dead. Nothing else pays for our sins, not works, not deeds, not religions. So the only way to heaven and to avoid hell, is by believing in Jesus for eternal life (John 6:47), without adding any of your own works (Romans 4:5). Believe in Jesus to take you to heaven, and you will be in heaven, no matter what, guaranteed. That easy, thanks to Jesus! Tell Jesus that you thank Him that you will be with Him in heaven when you die, because you believe in Jesus! It is too late to be saved, after death
