Why is Julian Assange in prison for releasing stolen government documents but not the editor of the Mail on Sunday for doing the same?

Yes its an interesting point, why not indeed. It caused an awful lot of trouble, but dont forget it was the Times who printed the first lot of disclosures.

Whoever released the diplomatic cables should be jailed. He (she) caused great harm to the ambassador who had to resign for doing his job, and caused a severe strain in relations between UK and US because the Narcissist-in-Chief doesn't abide criticism. What future ambassador will dare send home accurate appreciations of the US government?

Because Julian Assange makes the elite class very butthurt every time he exposes them.

Skipping bail, hiding in an embassy to avoid being tried for sexual offences, so as usual you are busy representing the facts.
Cherry picking as usual.
I guess you think Assange is another ‘exemplary’ human being. Lol.

Assange is in jail in the UK for failing to surrender to bail but he could be jailed in the USA if his leaking of documents in the US was harmful to national security. The emails leaked by the Mail on Sunday were embarrassing but not harmful to national security anyway.

Assange isn't in prison for releasing stolen government documents, he's in prison for skipping bail.
