Is there any point in the 'must take' rule in draughts?

I keep switching it off in smartphone games in the belief that is pointlessly restrictive and tedious.

Yes. The point is that its a game of strategy, and forcing an opponent into a move is a strategy. It also prevents the game from becoming stale with both players just moving up the field until they're right next to each other, but with no way to take pieces.

Its a rule of the game. If you don't like it, don't play it.

Yes, there is. It is to add more skill to the game & to stop players cheating.

In official tournament rules you must take.

I'm not sure that's the answer I was looking for, but it makes the question all the more topical.
