Seems you maths people like to answer the same easy question over and over again, and yet my yahoo maths questions never get answered? Sorry to hijack this question, but I now have an accumulation of questions over the months but need to solve them so I can grasp the subject at hand and move on to the next. I'm not forcing anyone, just have a limited amount of time and been stuck on the same thing for ages. This is just one...

Here's another way to multiply mixed numbers:

(3 + 3/4)(2 + 1/2)

First: 3 * 2 = 6

Outer: 3 * 1/2 = 3/2 = 1 1/2

Inner 3/4 * 2 = 6/4 = 3/2 = 1 1/2

Last: 3/4 * 1/2 = 3/8

Now add those up:

6

1 1/2

1 1/2

.. 3/8

-------

9 3/8

Answer:

9 3/8

3 3/4 * 2 1/2

Start with turning both mixed numbers into improper fractions:

15/4 * 5/2

To multiply fractions, the product of the numerators is the product's numerator and the product of the denominators is the product's denominator, so:

(15 * 5) / (4 * 2)

and simplify both halves:

75/8

And if you need it back as a mixed number:

9 3/8
