What kind of people would be in homeless shelters?

Are they really filled with criminals and young adults who don't want to listen to their parents? Or is this only what an abusive/toxic family would say to discourage a member, who wants to distance themself from the family and start a new life without them, from leaving and staying in a homeless shelter until they get their feet on the ground?

(This is assuming that the one wanting to leave is suffering from depression and on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but the family continues to give them Hell on a regular basis and try to make it look like they're the problem.)

LOL, horrible answer. No need to assume when there are statistics everywhere that shows exactly who is homeless and why.

Many of the homeless are lazy, no-good bums who never worked a day in their lives!

Most homeless shelters house people who are mentally ill and homeless for that reason.

Yes -- they forgot to tell you about the mentally ill as well.

Most are drug addicts and alcoholics. While compelling and make for great human interest stories; very few are "fallen on hard times" scenarios unless it's through drugs and alcohol.

I know two women currently living in homeless shelters. One has a prior criminal record and did drugs, the other one did meth. So homeless shelter should be a last resort because you are going to be in with some rough people. Also the mental hospitals are filled with drug addicts and people with past convictions.

what ******* mental hospitals, reagan got rid of them all. now they put you in for three days and kick your *** out for insurance reasons. the state pays for a lot of these people to be treated which is what they need. as well as shelter and a chance at a better life. drugs/trauma . read gabor mate.

The vast majority of people in homeless situations are mentally ill.

the consensus estimate as of 2014 was that, at minimum, 25 percent of the American homeless—140,000 individuals—were seriously mentally ill at any given point in time. Forty-five percent of the homeless—250,000 individuals—had any mental illness.
