You are correct that cows produce milk for their young but I think you mean excess milk for people when you say "produce milk".
Those aren't just any cow those are milking cow or kept for milking by people nursing cows.
They will feed any calf in the herd. A calf is a new born.
Now " cow" indemtifies a fertile female.
A "bull" is a fertile male.
A "steer" is sterile offspring of both.
They come from the species "bovine" which is a cloven footed mammel of a certain physical makeup and origin.
Its not difficult to understand you.know little about "bovines" and would like to learn.

"Cow" is an ambiguous term.
Some use cattle as the term for members of the subfamily Bovinae, with cow the female and bull the male. And steer the castrated male.
Actually, cow applies to a female that has had a calf. A young female is called a heifer. Young of both sexes are called calves.
A bullock is an older steer except in the US, it is a young bull.
An ox is cattle used for draft, and could be a steer or a cow
Some use "cow" as the same as cattle, both female cows and male bulls, but that is confusing.

Cows are FEMALE. Bulls are MALE. Only cows that HAVE GIVEN BIRTH to a CALF can produce milk...and will continue to produce milk as long as it is milked everyday for the rest of its existence or if "she" gets too old.
