Are most white Americans of Irish ancestry?

I hope this doesn't sound a dumb question.

Update:

I heard it was the Irish that built New York City and the White House.

Why would you ask that? Is Ireland empty of all the people because they came to the US? Get real. Western Europeans are all white and they came to the US to settle.

    It isn't clear.

    Surveys have returned results of  German (17%), Irish (12%), English (9%), Italian (6%), French (4%), Polish (3%), Scottish (3%), Scotch-Irish (2%), Dutch (2%), Norwegian (2%) and Swedish (1%)

However there is likely a large under-reporting of English or British (which might include Scottish and Irish as well) as they are most likely to simply identify as 'American' rather than 'English-American'. It is made even more complicated by the fact that huge numbers of white Americans have ancestors from more than one group.

No, although many of them are.  There was a great deal of immigration from England, Wales, Scotland, Germany, Italy and other European countries.

Many records of the nationalities of the immigrants are available online.

They are either of Mexican or Red Indian descent

No. They tend to be fairly commonly of Irish ancestry and it's difficult to distinguish genetically between people from Great Britain and people from Ireland, but many of them are British, German or Eastern European in origin. You can tell from their surnames.
