No, the only direct connection from the US to Germany was a transatlantic cable from Emden, Germany to New York City, but even that was cut by the Allies after Germany attacked Poland in 1939.

Yes. The war was not as secretive or irrational as thought. Individual soldiers and units experienced trauma, but Roosevelt and Hitler lived dignified lives of upper-class people. However, in those days, they didn't have the trans-Atlantic cable that made phone calls possible between Roosevelt and Hitler.
