Depends on the solar panels.
The larger 20 watts or more panels that are used for highway camera battery and network connectivity systems or the ones on people's home roofs (100 watts or more each panel) are very reliable. These, like any other quality electronics still do need some attention with maintenance... like removing dust/dirt, so sunlight is not "filtered". They usually don't fail - but there are reasons they can be caused to fail... like getting hit with large hail stones.
The smaller panels - less than 7 watts, typically used with inexpensive string lights or built in to low-cost, low voltage, battery banks or associated with certain toys, are not designed to be "rugged" or last multiple years and can fail under lots of different conditions. Most times, it is not the small panel that failed, but the device to which it is connected...

yes. The only issue is having the money up front to put in solar panels. You can save more then 70% on electric bills. each month. Say the average bill is $100. you can save $70 a month every month during the hot months and cold months. and in spring and fall months you might even have extra electricity. So you can save $700-$900 a year. But it will cost $2000-$2800 to put in solar panels. it would take 3 year to pay for the panels. It is usually worth it. Just not everyone has $2500 to put in solar panels.

Solar panels are very reliable. They have no moving parts and don't tend to "break". They have a long life span with slow degradation.
The solar power systems can have problems and be more complex. I live fully with solar power and there can be issues with fuses blowing or if you have a non-pure sine wave inverter (I do) then some devices will not work.
But a well designed solar power system is very reliable and without the monthly payment to a centralized utility.
