It should lower your taxes. Homestead exemption by definition makes part of your property exempt from taxes. Every state has different laws and each county and taxing district in your state could be different, so I would contact your tax assessor.

In my county, the assessment is frozen at 65 and doesn't go up thereafter.

Property tax rules vary by state.

    Talk with your county/city assessor.

Probably.  Different taxing jurisdictions calculate their taxes differently and have different policies, but senior discounts are pretty common.  To find out for certain, you'll have to look up whomever it is that you're paying taxes to and find out how they do it.
