Why do journalist use the first amendment give them the right to refuse to reveal the identity of a confidential source?

    It's not Constitutional, it a federal statute.

    That's not included in the first amendment.  To my knowledge there is no federal law but there are state shield laws. They can and have been overturned.

    By the term "use" the Constitution, you mean "avail yourself of its granted Rights and Protections"??
