Draw the Lewis structure and then specify the electron pair and molecular geometries for each of the following molecules or ions. ?

Identify the hybridization of the central atom.

a. XeOF4

b. OSF4

c. BrF5

d. The central atom in Br3^-1

    Lewis structure

    As for hybridization, you may be tempted to use sp3d or sp3d2, but that would be a mistake, since neither of those actually occur (if any hybridization occurs). It has been known for some time that there is no d-orbital involvement in the bonding for hypervalent central atoms.  The most likely explanation for bonding in hypervalent molecules is 3-center, 4-electron bonding.  Google it.  There are lots of links.

    Electron pair geometry .... Molecular geometry

    a) octahedral ..................... square pyramidal

    b) trigonal bipyramidal ....... trigonal bipyramidal

    c) octahedral ..................... square pyramidal

    d) trigonal bipyramidal ...... linear
