It's both.  They are not opposites.  There are free elections so it is a representative democracy.  And it has no king so it's a republic.

It is a republic with democratic forms but no real democracy. Instead it is a plutocracy (rule by the rich).

Is there any society that is not ruled by the rich?

I call it a democratic republic.   There is such a thing and that is what the US really is.

Well the founders used them interchangeably so I don't really see any compelling reason for semantic hair-splitting, although Republicans favor "republic" because it provides what they see as a high-minded justification for an anachronistic system that was quickly cobbled together by a handful of pre-industrial aristocrats who never dreamed the country would still exist at this point, since it gives more power to the party representing fewer voters (with more than a little voter suppression just to be on the safe side). But they're just words.
