The US has had a sense of Nationalism since the end of the Civil War. That began it's meteoric rise to success. Afghanistan is in the terrible shape it's in because it doesn't have a Nationalistic image of itself. The US tried to instill one there with only partial success. Great Britain has recently got a new Nationalistic view of itself by voting for Brexit.
