Neither were "Communist" in reality to begin with. China retains totalitarianism towards social issues, Russia is an Oligarchy, now without the political ideology as a sham excuse of collectivism.

China and Russia are still imposing "communist conditions" on most of the poor in their countries (many still wait in line for toilet paper and meat).
There are some Capitalist cities in both countries that almost look like America, but, even there it becomes obvious that one can go to jail for speaking wrong. All former and current communist countries torture and murder their own people and any visitors they deem necessary.

a) China is not, and has never been, a Communist country with a communist economy. It is a socialist country with a socialist economy, but ruled by a communist party.
b) Russia was a socialist country with a socialist economy, but never a communist country with a communist economy. It was riled by a communist party in the past. Currently Russia is a capitalist country with a capitalist economy and ruled by an oligarchy that is politically center to center right politically.

Communism means a classless stateless global society, so clearly neither China nor Russia were ever Communist. They were state capitalist. China is now a mix of private and state capitalism, while Russia is mainly private capitalist.
