How does the ECU control engine speed?

    The idle air control valve bypasses air around the throttle plate for minor speed changes but newer drive by wire throttle bodies have an electric servo motor that changes throttle plate position when you step on the go pedal or use cruise control.

    Do you mean idle speed...... The idle air control valve will bump up your engine speed when you turn on the air-conditioning.... I would look on YouTube.

    It can see the engine speed through the camshaft and crankshaft sensors.  Once the engine speed limit is reached, it can use a variety of methods of control such as cutting off the fuel injectors.
