Ignorant means lacking in knowledge of something., For example I am ignorant as to how a jet engine works. It should not be mis-used to describe an ill-mannered or unintelligent person.

    It depends what you mean.

Anyone can be 'ignorant' without being a bad person. In this sense it merely means 'not knowing'. So perhaps uneducated, unaware.

In the insulting sense, something like 'bigoted' or 'narrow-minded' would work.

Unfortunately, you're right. It's unfortunate because those who use it as synonymous with stupid are ignorant of what the word means!

"Ignorant" is not the same as "stupid". "Ignorant" means lacking knowledge. Someone can be quite intelligent and still be ignorant in certain areas. Few of us know much about epidemiology, for example. It's not bad to be ignorant- it's only bad to make decisions with trying to become educated enough to know what you're doing.
